Brooke Sharpe started this petition to Waterloo Region District School Board and

"Sir John A Macdonald was Canada’s first prime minister- and was responsible for countless atrocious acts against Indigenous people during his time in public office. He was integral in establishing the Indian Act, which allowed the government to take control of almost all aspects of Indigenous people’s lives including land, resources, education, and administration. This act stripped Indigenous people of their basic human rights. Macdonald also played a central role in establishing the system of residential schools that horrifically oppressed and assimilated Indigenous people until as late as the 1990s. The residential schools were home to horrific abuse against Indigenous children and caused generational trauma that is still felt to this day. These measures have oppressed the Indigenous population for hundreds of years. They have caused a fabric of systematic oppression, racism, and trauma against Indigenous people to be woven into Canadian society." by: http://chng.it/vpCzN6jMhM

We ask that the Waterloo Region District School Board stand with the Indigenous community and its allies by changing the name of Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School. The WRDSB formed a committee and should have had implementation plans completed by February of 2021. Just this week the committee delayed final recommendations to December 2021. Waiting this long is unnecessary, a year and a half to debate this has been long enough. We need the change now.

This petition was created after a conversation with Jain Redfearn, if she had not shared her story I would not have been prompted to create this movement. Jain has been fighting for the change of SJAM SS for years, her courage should be honoured and recognized as a part of this effort.

Thank you for your consideration in signing this petition.
