Petition Started by Cllr Elizabeth Wickham (SGRA)

The A226 London Road route through Swanscombe and Greenhithe has had numerous mains water leaks over recent years (over 50 in 5 years).  This has ultimately resulted in the collapse of Galley Hill Road on Easter Monday 2023, causing major ongoing disruption to the town of Swanscombe and Greenhithe.  

There are a number of places along the A226 that are built on chalk spines and where the roadway would be vulnerable to collapse if another leak occurs.  

 Thames water  therefore must (whilst the A226 road is closed to through traffic) take positive action to ensure a similar collapse never occurs again.

We the undersigned residents therefore  petition Kent County Council 

(assisted by our Member of Parliament for Dartford, Gareth Johnson)

to require Thames Water to:

a) Remove and replace all ageing water mains and fittings that remain under the A226 London Road  

and 

b) Ensure that none of the replacement equipment is installed within any chalk spines or other vulnerable areas along the A226 route.
