Force big supermarkets to give unsold food to charities.

The Issue

In the USA, 15.8 million children have limited access to food.

Our state and country have massive issues with supermarkets wasting food -- 55,000,000 million tons of it a year.

Each year, about 40 percent of all food in the United States goes uneaten. It's just tossed out or left to rot.

We can fix this. France just passed a law to do that:

"French supermarkets will be banned from throwing away or destroying unsold food and must instead donate it to charities or for animal feed, under a law set to crack down on food waste.

The French national assembly voted unanimously to pass the legislation as France battles an epidemic of wasted food that has highlighted the divide between giant food firms and people who are struggling to eat.

As MPs united in a rare cross-party consensus, the centre-right deputy Yves Jégo told parliament: “'There’s an absolute urgency – charities are desperate for food. The most moving part of this law is that it opens us up to others who are suffering.'”

Many companies in the USA are unwilling to donate food like this to charity for fear of getting sued, or so they claim. But in 1996, the United States Congress and President Bill Clinton passed the Good Samaritan Food Donation Act, which protects them from those lawsuits!

We demand that the Washington State Legislature and Governor Jay Inslee pass a local version of this French law that includes additional local legal protections, requiring that companies donate unused food in a matching fashion to charity instead of throwing it away.

There is no reason children and families in our food-rich, agriculturally blessed State of Washington should go hungry.
