Washington County WI, Charlie Kirk Highway 50K Funding for road sign #SayNoToRenaming
The Issue
The Washington County Board is considering spending $50,000 to name a highway after Charlie Kirk—a decision that raises real questions about priorities.
At a time when communities are facing tangible needs, that $50,000 could go much further if invested in things that directly improve residents’ lives. For example, it could help repair aging local roads that drivers actually rely on every day, fund emergency services that are often stretched thin, or support public schools that are constantly being asked to do more with less. Even allocating those funds toward mental health services, parks, or small business grants would have a clearer, more immediate impact on the community.
Naming infrastructure after a political figure—especially one as polarizing as Charlie Kirk—does little to address the everyday concerns of the people who live and work in Washington County. Public funds should reflect shared priorities, not symbolic gestures that risk dividing residents.
We don’t agree with this decision. Let’s take a stand against this and prioritize the needs of our community. Ultimately, the question isn’t just whether someone deserves recognition—it’s whether this is the best use of limited taxpayer dollars. And for many, it’s hard to argue that it is.
The final decision on funding for the Charlie Kirk Highway is coming up in April. Regardless of where people stand on this project, one thing should be clear: our city officials need to do a better job prioritizing the needs of our community.
Too often, it feels like decisions are made without fully considering the voices of the people who actually live here. We deserve transparency, thoughtful planning, and a genuine commitment to what benefits our neighborhoods—not just what moves projects forward.
Now is the time to speak up, stay engaged, and hold our leaders accountable. Our community should always come first.
Public dollars are meant to serve the entire community—regardless of political beliefs. Using city or county funds in a way that appears to promote or highlight a specific individual risks crossing a line that many communities across the country have intentionally avoided.
If the board moves forward with this decision, Washington County will stand alone—and not in a way we should be proud of. We would become the only county in the United States using public funds for signage tied to a political figure like Charlie Kirk.
That should give everyone pause.
