Many families, like mine, are bound by an arduous waiting period of  6 months between each visit to their loved ones incarcerated at Wasco State Prison. This happens due to the closure of two out of the three family units, leaving just one operational. In essence, it feels like we are being punished too. It is not just our families suffering such a fate; several other facilities enjoy access to their family units in as little as a 45 to 90-day waiting period, some even have 3-night stays.

The importance of regular contact between inmates and their families is undisputed. Numerous studies indicate that regular family contact plays a critical role in successful reintegration upon an inmate's release, consequently reducing recidivism rates

Therefore, we request the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) comply with the state law, taking immediate action to reinstate the two non-operational family units at Wasco State Prison. These units should be used as intended, enabling families to have more access to their incarcerated loved ones under the Wasco State Prison Family units project.
