Support to relocate the confederate statue at the courthouseoverwhelms opposition and Board of Supervisors
Front Royal, Virginia (VA) – On August 18, 2020, the Warren County Board of Supervisors held one of their monthly meetings. This meeting was held at the Warren County Government Center located at 220 N. Commerce Avenue. The meeting began at 7:00 PM and lasted well into the night.
The agenda for the evening did not include anything to do with the confederate statue located at the courthouse – the time at the end of the meeting for ‘general public’ comments and concerns was utilized to speak to the issue of the statue.
There was no clear way forward regarding how long each person could speak or who (of those signed up) would be afforded the opportunity to speak. There were 24 individuals signed up to speak – majority of them to show and voice support for removing and relocating the statue at the local courthouse.
U.S. Navy Veteran and co-founder of Front Royal Unites Samuel Porter mentioned, “I am humbled people allowed me to speak for us collectively. I hope I was able to make the points necessary given the time crunch.” Mr. Porter also mentioned that he remains hopeful of the community at large and suggests we, “Never give up on making this world a better place… a better place for everyone.”
Cami Hubbard, 16, of Warren County, Virginia also spoke to the issue of the statue, her mom Stevi Hubbard yielded her the time. Expressing how people rely on it to back up their racial or prejudice views she eloquently stated, “This town will not grow to be a town that everyone feels welcomed in,” [if things are not changed.] Ms. Hubbard made sure to remind the board they are elected there to represent her age group as well and she, along with her friends are watching how they lead our community.
Gene Kilby, along with the Coming to the Table organization representative Penny Smith, Rev. Valerie Hayes, and a few others did get to speak. Front Royal Unites along with their allies, supporters, local leaders, business leaders, and other affiliates will continue to strive for equality.
Front Royal Unites continues to thank everyone.
