Warning Markers for Aggressive Patients Regardless of Location

The Issue

As a paramedic, I've often found myself in precarious situations dealing with aggressive patients. Unfortunately, the current protocol only warns us about potential threats if the patient is at their registered address. This puts us in a vulnerable position when patients are located elsewhere. We need a system that ensures our safety by warning us about aggressive patients based on their National Health Service (NHS) patient number, and not solely their address.

Cases of assault against Paramedics in the UK are far too common. According to the NHS, there were over 3,569 reported cases of physical assaults against ambulance staff in England alone in 2019/20, a significant percentage of which might have been avoided with better precautions (source: NHS Protect statistics, 2020). The magnitude of this issue cannot be overstated, especially when it predominantly stems from a procedural oversight that can certainly be rectified.

Instituting a system that enables more comprehensive warning protocols for potentially aggressive patients will not only protect Paramedics but will also benefit patients by ensuring that care delivery remains efficient and compassionate. Paramedics are a vital part of the healthcare system and deserve the best protection measures available.

By signing this petition, we can bring this matter to the attention of health authorities, prompting necessary alterations to patient-handling protocols. I therefore urge you to support this petition, so our Paramedics can perform their life-saving work in a safer environment.

  • 17,114 incidents of violence and abuse registered during the 2023/24 financial year- AACE (2025).
  • Every single day last year, a staggering 47 ambulance staff were abused or attacked – two every hour of every day throughout the whole year- AACE (2025).
  • This represents an increase of 123% in reported incidents since records began eight years ago -AACE (2025).
