Ward 7 Park Delayed Until 2028 — Support Interim Play Space Now
The Issue
I am a resident of Ward 7 in Barrie, and like many parents in our community, I am concerned about the lack of parks and accessible green spaces in our neighbourhood.
Our homes were built in 2020, yet families with young children still do not have a nearby safe place to play. As a parent, I see firsthand how much a local park would support children’s physical activity, social development, and overall well-being.
We appreciate that our local councillor has listened to residents’ concerns and supported efforts to improve our growing community and have been informed that a park is planned as part of a future development phase, with an approximately $2 million park expected to begin construction in late 2027 and reach completion in late summer 2028. While this investment is welcome, the timeline means families will have waited nearly a decade for access to basic community green space.
In the meantime, the lack of parks is already creating real challenges. Children are often left playing on residential streets, raising avoidable safety concerns. There is also growing frustration across nearby communities about unequal access to outdoor space, which is putting pressure on shared areas and creating tension among residents. This highlights the urgent need for fair and accessible public parks for all families.
Research from organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization shows that access to parks improves children’s physical and mental health, reduces stress, and strengthens community well-being.
We are not asking for luxury amenities — we are asking for safe, accessible space for children to play and families to gather.
We urge the City of Barrie, developers, and stakeholders to explore ways to accelerate delivery or provide interim solutions such as temporary play areas, open green space access, or small recreational installations while the permanent park is being built.
Please sign this petition to support the families of Ward 7 and help ensure our community becomes a safe, family-friendly place for children to grow.
