Wallace State Community College: Fire Leigh Ann Courington

The Issue

CBS 42 Local News Coverage

Leigh Ann Courington is a professor at Wallace State Community College. Earlier this week, she came under fire for hateful comments regarding the city-approved "Cullman Comes Out" pride event.

Her comments include:

“The devil is attacking our beautiful town of Cullman now apparently…and the police chief is in on it? I heard he was a crazy-ass liberal but this??? We need a rally by the you-know-what to put an end to this foolishness. Of course, it may be as well-attended as the Juneteenth event the white liberal weirdos tried to do a few years ago in Hanceville.”

This quote presumably suggests that the KKK should come to Cullman and put a stop to a city-approved event. Prior to this incident, Courington had the motto of the confederacy (Deo Vindice) as the description of her Instagram account.

Courington suggested in the Facebook post's comments that being a "sundown town" kept Cullman from becoming a "ghetto" like Birmingham.

The post has since been removed.

After CBS 42 contacted her for an interview and she declined, but defended her comments further:

“People need to get a life,” Courington told CBS 42. “Good grief.”

The post was private, Courington argued, and not meant for public view.

“That was on my private page, and if someone doesn’t like it, they need to unfriend/block me,” she wrote.

9/28:

Wallace State has released a statement concerning the event that transpired that reads:

“As a college, we affirm our commitment to recognizing, addressing, and eliminating racism, bigotry and discrimination in all its forms, and to serving as a beacon of equity, equality, inclusivity and accessibility for our community.”

We, members of the community, urge Wallace State to act quickly in the removal of Courington from her position. If Wallace State truly wants to eliminate discrimination, this is step one.

Please contact Vicki Karolewics, President of Wallace State Community College, to suggest the removal of this hatefulness from WSCC.
