Waegwoltic Club members should vote on the Clubhouse rebuild

Waegwoltic Club members should vote on the Clubhouse rebuild
The Issue
The Waegwoltic Clubhouse rebuild will determine the direction, character and activities of the Club for generations to come.
The designs presented by the Board of Directors do not reflect the members' priorities as disclosed in the Membership Engagement Survey.
The key problems are:
1) The Board is putting the cart before the horse by rushing into the rebuild without a strategic plan for the Club.
2) The Board plans to put the Club millions of dollars in debt without first seeking a mandate from the Club or providing a plan for how the funds will be repaid.
3) 78% of members are families with children. The proposed design does not proportionately reflect their needs.
4) The proposed design prioritizes staff and dining spaces (which could instead be in the multipurpose building) over amenities many members said they wanted in the Clubhouse (gym, social spaces, and indoor activities for use year-round).
Some of these problems are detailed in reports submitted to the Board (see here and here).
We members own the Club. The Board is accountable to us, but has resisted giving us a vote on the design. A decision as important as the new Clubhouse should not be driven by a handful of members or staff. It should be made democratically by the membership as a whole.
By-Law 51 allows the members to limit the Board's powers by resolution at a meeting and By-Law 22 requires an extraordinary meeting be held on request in writing by 100 adult members.
Therefore we, the undersigned, request that the President of the Waegwoltic Club call an extraordinary meeting of the member to vote on the following motions:
- Granting members final authority to approve the Clubhouse design, by majority vote;
- Requiring the Board to obtain members' approval before incurring debt for the rebuild; and
- Revising the By-Laws to bring them into accordance with the incorporating legislation and to improve transparency and accountability.
Sign this petition to ensure that our voices are heard and respected.
