The Issue

Do you support having the upcoming terminal at Sky Harbor Airport named for Arizona statesman Ernest W. "Mac" McFarland?

He was one of the most beloved statesmen in Arizona history. Ernest McFarland began his life on a farm, won the Triple Crown in state politics, and was on a first-name basis with world leaders. Yet throughout his life, he considered himself just a public servant.

Ernest W. McFarland (1894-1984) was a WWI Navy veteran who rose to serve as U.S. Senator (1941-1953), U.S. Senate Majority Leader (1951-1953), Arizona Governor (1955-1959), and Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court (1968).

Known as “Mac,” his dedication to American veterans returning home from WWII resulted in his drafting of the educational and home and business loan provisions of the G.I. Bill (Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944).

As Governor, he founded the Arizona Parks System. As a businessman, he created KTVK due to his fascination with the then-new medium of television.

Despite his unprecedented achievements, Arizona has yet to name a prominent structure after him.

The new terminal will be built on the west side of the airport close to where Terminals 1 and 2 were located. Terminal 1 closed in 1990, and Terminal 2 closed in 2020. Both were demolished. This will be the first new terminal construction since Terminal 4 opened in 1990.

Planning and environmental preparation will take several years, and construction is not anticipated to begin until after 2030. The project will be funded with passenger facility charges, bonds, and airport funding. No tax dollars will be used.

Other individuals are being considered for this honor, but your signature will help bring new awareness to Mac and his contributions to Arizona and the nation.

Thank you,

The Ernest W. McFarland Foundation
