Voices of Concern: Parents Call for Urgent UT Austin Campus Safety Action

The Issue

To:

• University of Texas at Austin

• Austin Police Department

• City of Austin

We are parents of students living in apartments near UT Austin. Many of us live far away and depend on university and city leadership to ensure our children’s safety.

Recent violent incidents have created fear and uncertainty among the kids and these concerns must be taken seriously and addressed proactively.

We urgently request:

• Immediate, real-time emergency alerts sent directly to students in nearby residential areas — not limited to on-campus locations.

• A consistent and visible police presence, including evening and late-night patrols in West Campus and surrounding neighborhoods.

• Expanded SureWalk availability for West Campus students.

Enhanced security measures, including improved lighting, monitored cameras, and coordinated patrol coverage.

Clear public communication outlining safety protocols and zero tolerance for bias-motivated threats.

• A prompt community safety forum with university and city leadership.

Parents should not have to fear for their children’s safety while they pursue their education.

We urge immediate, transparent, and sustained action so our children live and study without fear in and around the campus

I’m horrified and heartbroken by the mass shooting in downtown Austin this weekend. Now, a third victim has died and more than a dozen people are injured. My prayers are with those still recovering. I’m incredibly thankful to the police, EMS, nurses, and doctors who saved lives. I’m in touch with local and federal law enforcement about their investigation, including potential ideological motives or links to terrorism. I encourage anyone with relevant information to contact Austin Police. A future without gun violence is not just possible — it’s necessary. Americans should be able to have a fun night out without it turning into an unspeakable nightmare. I’ll continue my work on these issues in Congress.
