Give Us An In-Person Graduation from Community College of Allegheny County
The Issue
The Community College of Allegheny County has its commencement set for Thursday, May 19 - virtually. Yet, events such as concerts and festivals, drawing many more people, are ongoing, and many of those graduating students have even been attending in-person courses. As a 2020 high school graduate, this news particularly rattles me. CCAC Class of 2022 students should have the opportunity to celebrate their achievements together with their classmates and families.
Other area institutions, inclusive of Saint Vincent College, Duquesne University, and the University of Pittsburgh, have announced plans to hold graduation ceremonies in person this year. Students, their guests, and faculty can complete the proceedings masked for everyone's safety, as well as submit either proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or a negative test - no different than would be required for concert attendance. The ceremonies can even be held outdoors to further lessen the spread of disease. There are ways that an in-person commencement can be completed while keeping all involved safe.
Between balancing coursework and real work, familial duties, and of course the pandemic, CCAC's 2022 graduates have shouldered a lot over the last few years. Graduates deserve recognition - let's give these resilient students the shining spotlight moment we've earned!
