Promote Virginia Student Civic Engagement through Half-Day Excused Student Absence
The Issue
Prior to the closure of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), the county introduced the ability for students to leave for a half a day of school to engage in advocacy through civic engagement. Although this measure has been attacked by skeptics for simply allowing students to advocate for social justice while the legislatures of America are in session, this policy has energized teens to enter politics throughout Fairfax County. Such a change deserves to be implemented throughout Virginia, so therefore we are calling on the Virginia General Assembly to amend state school attendance law to allow a part-day excused absence for students to engage in political and civic events.
