Today, we begin operation Dawn Breaks. Senator Marsden is expected to re-submit his bill to abolish juvenile life without parole in Virginia. With the recent re-sentencing of Azeem Majeed and the upcoming re-sentencing of the DC sniper, the Senator has a much stronger hand to play. But it will by no means be a slam dunk. We need to prepare the way for the bill's passage as best we can to ensure that those who have reformed have a chance to prove it.. So we need to move on to the members of the House and the Senate in order to build support. I know for a fact that the House Republicans are talking about this matter. So we need to capitalize on that to ensure that the bill makes it to the floor for a vote. So I am asking once again for hard copy letters. If you live in Virginia, please write your state Delegate and your Senator and tell them why this bill should become law. Speak about protecting the victims of crime and their families and tell them that this bill would do that by preventing the Commonwealth from having to re-open old wounds. I was there at Majeed's re-sentencing and I can tell you, I am grateful that the victim's ailing 79 year old aunt wasn't there to hear the Commonwealth's recitation of the gruesome details of her nephew's death. Nobody with a heart wants that to happen. But that is exactly what will happen with every Miller re-sentencing if Senator Marsden's bill does not pass.
