The Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board (HALRB) voted to designate the core area around the current grave markers location a historical landmark, roughly 325 ft.² (shown in blue on the attached map). This is not the final decision as the county and has to go through a review process. But the vote does show that the board recognizes the county's history and is aware of the historical significance of the Robert Ball Senior Family Cemetery and is trying to show this through preservation. They indicated to the developer that the designation does not stop the development, only alter its footprint. Public hearings will be scheduled in November and December at the Arlington County Planning Commission and the County Board. Ultimately it is the County Board that will determine if the property is designated as a local district. Public comment is encouraged at those future hearings. Keep signing and spread the word!! Leave comments! Many faces of the board were very impressed that the numbers had risen by over 300 in just 36 hours after I had submitted a signature list to them. Mainly because I was able to reach descendants of Horatio Ball, Robert Ball Sr's brother.
