Petition Update – Thornhill Road Safety (LS12)
We’ve now passed 200 supporters — thank you to everyone who has signed, shared, and supported this campaign.
Since launching the petition, I’ve met with Leeds City Council Highways and our local councillors to present the evidence and concerns around Thornhill Road.
Key points from that meeting:
The council confirmed that no physical traffic calming measures will currently be installed, based on their criteria (average speeds under 20mph and low recorded collision numbers).
Interim actions were agreed, including repainting road markings and reviewing signage.
The petition and evidence pack are to be escalated to senior management for further review.
What’s happened since:
Road marking repainting has now started — one of the agreed actions.
However, no formal written response or update has been provided on the wider actions discussed.
Why this matters:
This campaign has never been about one incident. It’s about a consistent pattern of unsafe driving on a residential road used daily by vulnerable residents and schoolchildren.
Manual monitoring carried out in September showed:
349 vehicles recorded
114 (33%) driving unsafely or illegally
That’s 1 in 3 drivers ignoring markings, speeding, or cutting the junction
The current system relies on recorded collisions and average speeds — not real-world behaviour or near misses. In simple terms, that means:
Action is unlikely until someone is seriously injured.
We’re not willing to wait for that.
This campaign is growing, and every signature strengthens the case for proper intervention — not just temporary fixes.
Thank you again for your support. Please keep sharing.
