"Looking into the desperate eyes of dogs and cats taken into slaughterhouses is heartbreaking — what becomes a delicious meal for some is, in truth, the cruel ending of an innocent life. These animals are not food; they are sentient beings who deserve love, protection, and compassion.

This cruelty has been happening in Vietnam for decades. The world has spoken out — international animal welfare organizations, global media, and countless compassionate voices have urged Vietnam to end this practice. Yet, the Vietnamese government has not taken concrete action to ban the trade, slaughter, and consumption of dogs and cats.

We call upon you, friends and animal lovers everywhere, to stand with us in Vietnam against this cruelty. Together, let us petition the Government of Vietnam to issue a strict nationwide ban and enforce heavy penalties on the killing, trading, and eating of dogs and cats."

Some people have even claimed that eating dog and cat meat is part of “Vietnamese cuisine that cannot be erased,” such as Mr. Trần Huy Hoàng Anh (Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/thhaofficial/ Others, like Nguyễn Thanh Sơn (Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nguyenthanh.son.33/ have argued that eating dog and cat meat is permitted under Vietnamese law.

Both of these individuals attacked me personally when I launched my petition calling for a ban on the dog and cat meat trade. They even mentioned that they want to create a petition in support of allowing the killing and eating of dogs and cats.

The consumption of dog and cat meat poses significant public health risks. The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted the potential for the spread of rabies and other zoonotic diseases through this trade. With Vietnam's commitment to public health safety, it is crucial to acknowledge these risks and act accordingly to protect our people.

Additionally, as Vietnam becomes increasingly visible on the global stage, maintaining a positive national image is paramount. Allowing the continuation of the dog and cat meat trade tarnishes our reputation, as the international community increasingly recognizes the need for humane treatment of animals.
There are actionable steps that can be taken. Vietnam can implement stricter regulations that ban the killing and consumption of dogs and cats. Public awareness campaigns can be launched to educate citizens about the cruelties of the trade and the associated health risks. Encouraging alternatives to meat consumption and promoting animal welfare are steps towards a kinder, more compassionate society.

“Nhìn vào đôi mắt tuyệt vọng của những chú chó, chú mèo bị đưa vào lò mổ thật sự là một nỗi đau xé lòng — điều trở thành một bữa ăn ngon cho ai đó thực chất lại là sự kết thúc tàn nhẫn của một sinh linh vô tội. Những con vật này không phải là thực phẩm; chúng là những sinh linh biết đau đớn, biết yêu thương và xứng đáng được bảo vệ, trân trọng.

Thảm cảnh này đã diễn ra ở Việt Nam suốt nhiều thập kỷ. Cả thế giới đã nhiều lần lên tiếng — các tổ chức quốc tế bảo vệ động vật, truyền thông toàn cầu và vô số con người đầy lòng trắc ẩn đã kêu gọi Việt Nam chấm dứt hủ tục này. Thế nhưng, cho đến nay, Chính phủ Việt Nam vẫn chưa có một hành động cụ thể nào để ban hành lệnh cấm việc buôn bán, giết mổ và tiêu thụ thịt chó mèo.

Chúng tôi kêu gọi các bạn, những người bạn, những người yêu động vật ở khắp nơi, hãy cùng chung tay với chúng tôi tại Việt Nam chống lại sự tàn ác này. Hãy cùng nhau kiến nghị lên Chính phủ Việt Nam ban hành một lệnh cấm toàn quốc và áp dụng những hình phạt thật nghiêm khắc đối với hành vi giết mổ, buôn bán và ăn thịt chó mèo.”
