APPEAL: BRING BACK ECA TRIALS IN DELHI UNIVERSITY

Namaste! As another admission season is upon us at the University of Delhi, we were rather surprised to read a news item last week which suggested that the Extra Curricular Activities (ECA) trials have been cancelled for this year.

The news item read: "A meeting of the university’s standing committee on admission was held recently and it was unanimously decided that due to the current situation of COVID-19, it will not be possible to conduct trials for ECA, thus these have to be scrapped completely." (https://duexpress.in/du-admissions-2020-major-changes-in-the-admission-procedure/

In the article it was also mentioned that admissions for the sports quota will be done on the basis of certificates, and no trials would be held for the same. Similarly, admissions for the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS) would also be based on certificates.
We are glad to read that the University of Delhi is making accommodations for our country’s exceptional sports, NCC, and NSS talent.

BUT, we are VERY CONCERNED that similar accommodations are NOT being made for potential ECA applicants.

As you are aware, most ECA applicants have put in considerable effort in their training (most have over ten years of intensive training in their chosen field) and have achieved high levels of excellence. It is very unfortunate that the performing visual, oratory, and design arts, writing and debating are not being considered this year.

We agree that while regional and national certificates can be used to determine sports/NSS/NCC admissions, certificates might not be the appropriate yardstick to gauge candidates in the performing and visual arts.

However, we do believe that potential ECA candidates could still perhaps be considered while we maintain social distancing and other safe-guards given the current public health crisis.
We could have potential ECA applicants submit electronic samples of their work. For instance, applicants in dance or music could submit a 5minute video sample on YouTube and text message the YouTube link to a University of Delhi WhatsApp number/group.

A panel of experts could judge the applicants’ videos and help facilitate ECA admissions. This might not be too onerous, especially as we have gradually moved to a digital teaching/lecturing/performance space with the rising COVID cases in our country.

We urge the University of Delhi Admissions Committee to review their decision and consider reinstating the ECA trials (digitally).

As we all know, the arts community has been very badly hit with the current public health crisis, and doing away with the ECA trials would have an additional adverse impact on the morale of our young artistes who have been preparing for their Delhi University ECA trials.

THIS IS A HUMBLE APPEAL FROM THE ARTS COMMUNITY as well as the SUPPORTERS OF THE ARTS!!!!!! THANK YOU!
