Allow Leashed Dogs on VIA Rail

The Issue

Many Canadians include their dogs as full members of their families. Unfortunately, it’s difficult for them to travel if they don’t own a car.

Recently, GO Transit in Ontario changed their dog policy after a petition gathered over 25,000 signatures. Dogs are now allowed to travel on GO trains during low volume times as long as they’re leashed.

This petition is to encourage VIA Rail to update their pet policies to reflect a new reality where many Canadians have dogs and would lIke to be able to travel with them.

One compromise would be to designate one car on specific low volume train times for each route. That way, passengers wishing to avoid dogs could easily do so. But I suspect that the dog friendly car would be full of pet lovers looking to scratch some bellies and ogle some puppy eyes.
