Change the Vassar Public Schools Dress Code.

The Issue

(The school cannot tell me to delete this because it would be a violation of freedom of speech.)

The current Vassar public schools dress code is outdated, sexist and sexualizing pre teen and teenage girls. It forces girls to cover up parts of their body that should not be sexuailized. For example- shoulders, feet, knees and thighs.

It is not our problem if boys cannot keep their hands and eyes to themselves. Schools should be teaching accountability. Instead, they're blaming women for the clothes they wear rather then blaming men for sexualizing women. Guys need to learn that girls deserve respect no matter how they dress.

I know many girls at Vassar feel unheard, like they dont have a voice, and agree with me.

I've RARELY seen guys get dress coded. If females wear ripped jeans, the rips cannot be above the fingertips. If the ripped jeans do not meet compliance, they are forced to put tape over them (which ruins the jeans). Yet I see guys sagging their pants, showing their underwear, and wearing ripped jeans that show their underwear. If a female was to do the same, she would be dress coded immediately.

Another example is rule 13. " Sprays, glitter, or colored gel put in hair is not allowed at school" Whats the problem with glitter, spray or colored gel in students hair? Its not distracting, inappropriate or effecting the students learning.

I'm not saying Vassar needs to get rid of the dress code. I'm saying the rules should be fair across the board. The sexualization and targeting of women  needs to end, and together we can make that change. Our voices should be heard and the dress code should be modified.
