There is new hope for the world's smallest porpoise, the vaquita! Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has passed a permanent ban on gill nets. Gill nets are the vaquita's greatest threat, as the tiny mammals get caught in the nets and die. Nearly 80,000 of you signed Lady Freethinker's petition urging Mexico to ban the gill net and save the vaquita. Your voices, among those of other activists, were heard loud and clear. Vaquitas only exist in the Gulf of California in Mexico, and such strong government action was their only hope for survival. With gill nets now banned at all fisheries in vaquita territory, the beloved animals have a chance to flourish once more. Thank you for adding your voice!
