Why this petition matters

Prioritize the future of our kids, teachers and staff.  Make our school seismically safer.

We would like Florence Nightingale Elementary, Vancouver, to be top priority for Seismic upgrades because of its high risk profile for significant damage from a potential earthquake which translates to a threat for the children, teachers and staff.

With the upcoming Broadway Plan focusing on bringing young families into the neighbourhood, as well as investments in affordable and supported housing in the area, this school becomes even more important to the community.

This is an urgent issue  - there has been a decision to prioritize the school since 2013 and nothing has been done since then.

The Province of B.C. must commit funds to prioritize the safety of our kids and make our school seismically safe.

The safety of B.C. students is vital. Government is continuing to work on a comprehensive school seismic mitigation program to make schools safe in the event of an earthquake.”  B.C. Government.

If this is true, why then is one of the oldest buildings in Vancouver still without a commitment for seismic mitigation/replacement.

Actions speak louder than words. For decades we have been hearing the same narrative.

Florence Nightingale Elementary is a “Most vulnerable structure, at highest risk of widespread damage or structural failure; not repairable after event. Structural and non-structural seismic upgrades required”.

We ask the Province of B.C. to make the future of our children a priority by committing to funds to upgrade our school.

Prioritize the future of our kids, staff and teachers.  Make our school safer.
