VANCOUVER NEEDS AN INDOOR SKATEBOARD PARK.

The Issue

We demand that the Vancouver Parks Board immediately allocate funds and creates an indoor skateboard facility / space in Vancouver.

It is our demand that the balance of the 2.4 Million dollars ear marked in the 2019 - 2022 Vancouver Park’s Board Capital Plan towards “new skateboard parks “ be immediately allocated towards creating and providing a safe, inclusive, indoor space for skateboarding in the city of Vancouver, B.C. Canada.

With money, that has been allocated to our sport, that is yet to be spent in the current capital plan that expires and will disappear back into the city’s pockets in 2022, why are the growing needs of Vancouver's skateboarding population very clearly being ignored ?

In a city that rains annually 192.4 days of the year why is there currently zero indoor spaces being provided for skateboarders to safely practice and participate our sport and lifestyle ?

The mandate of the 2019 - 2022 Vancouver Park’s Board capital plan was to provide “equity, inclusion, and access for all residents, and to define our parks and recreation systems as both accessible and welcoming for all."  We the undersigned believe that the needs of skateboarders in Vancouver are being neglected and we demand immediate action and change.

The Park Board has jurisdiction over 180 park buildings that provides spaces for individuals, groups, organized sports, and tournaments to support healthy and active lifestyles. Assets such as courts (220+), tracks (4), grass and synthetic playfields (128 grass/13 synthetic), ball diamonds (125), and golf courses, yet at this time, zero indoor skateboard friendly safe spaces exist in our city.

Safe spaces such as the type we are asking for, are especially important for minorities, members of the LGBTQIA community, and other marginalized groups.  The current lack of support for the needs of skateboarder’s in Vancouver is not only forcing people into car parkades and into underused and often unsafe spaces but is directly putting members of our community at risk.

It is long overdue that skateboarding be given the same opportunities and access to safe indoor spaces as more “traditional sports”.

We demand immediate action by the Vancouver Parks Board in the allocation of funding towards the creation of a safe, inclusive, indoor space, for people of all ages, and ablilties to skateboard in Vancouver.
