WE DID IT! WE DID IT!
The Vancouver Aquarium announced today (Thursday, January 18th, 2018) that it will no longer keep whales and dolphins in its facility.
Last March, the Vancouver Park Board voted to end cetacean captivity at Vancouver Aquarium. However, the Aquarium imposed a judicial review on the Park Board cetacean ban. Despite no resolution coming from the judge yet, the Aquarium surprised us all today with its announcement.
Interesting that the Aquarium now says it can continue rescuing stranded cetaceans, despite claiming for years that the off-site rescue center needed to be able to place unreleasable cetaceans on display in Stanley Park. The Aquarium now says that should a rescued cetacean need ongoing care, the animal will be shipped to an appropriate long-term facility.
Of course, we need to continue keeping an eye on the Aquarium so no cetacean laundering operation with rescued cetaceans takes place. Also of concern is that the Aquarium plans to — when necessary and on a temporary basis - keep a rescued cetacean on display until an appropriate receiving facility has been identified.
Despite these concerns, you should be happy that with your help, we won the war on whales at the Vancouver Aquarium and no new whales and no new dolphins will ever perform there again.
CONGRATULATIONS, EVERYBODY! We finally did it.
