Let's not forget that the reason the Vancouver Aquarium agreed on Thursday to end cetacean captivity is purely financial with no ethical considerations at all. The Aquarium complains that fundraising is now difficult, so best to end captivity. HOWEVER, in their expansion plans, the Aquarium wants to build a "rescue" show tank in Stanley Park to "temporarily" keep rescued cetaceans.
Greatly concerning is the fact that the Aquarium considers a dolphin captured in Japan and kept for a decade performing in a Japanese aquarium, a "rescued" dolphin - that's how they purchased and imported the last three dolphins. That would mean that any time a dolphin is "rescued" anywhere in the world, the Aquarium can put it on display in Stanley Park.
That is unacceptable. Not only because rescues would not need to be local, but because the Aquarium's Marine Mammal Rescue Center is where the cetacean rescue pool should be built, and not made into a show tank in the tourist attraction.
So let's keep celebrating this big win for the whales, but be ready to help convince the Park Board to make sure that the cetacean rescue pool is built in the rescue center (or in the ocean better still!) and not in Stanley Park -- where the tank would be build with a show stadium around it and underwater viewing for millions of folks to fork out their money to see "rescued" dolphins. We all know that the Aquarium would make sure to keep that tank full, no matter where the new show dolphins come from.
Another petition to come. Please stay tuned.
