Vancouver Aquarium's 50th Cetacean Death
Poor Jack the Harbour porpoise died on August 12th, 2016 after spending 5 years captive at the Vancouver Aquarium. Unfortunately, Jack was rescued when he was an infant and there was no intent to ever release him back to the wild. From the start, the Aquarium saw another money maker in Jack, so much so that in the following CBC report, the Aquarium spokesperson is quoted saying that the donors will miss Jack! Shameful.
We await news on the cause of death, but we wonder if placing Jack in the tank with the Beluga whales might have been the cause. These species do not have the same geographical range so they would never live in the same ocean environment.
Jack and the other porpoise Daisy, were placed in the Beluga show tank in January this year...and 7 months later, Jack is dead.
Aquarium supporters will claim that since Jack was rescued as an infant, at least he lived 5 years more... Yeah, but 5 years in whale jail! What kind of life is that?
The argument is yes, rescue and rehab Jack, but give him a chance at a supervised release. The poor guy never got the chance and we think everyone deserves a chance at freedom.
