As previously noted, the Park Board has responded to the public outcry and amended the parking meter plans slightly. It's not really significant and the plan to install pay parking is still on the cards. I have requested that they abandon their plan to install parking meters altogether and asked them to respond, so that I could share that with you. I have not heard back. I suppose that's because they feel that their slight accommodation of reducing the start time by a few weeks is as far as they are willing to go. The Park Board knows how we feel. They know that thousands signed this petition and so, at this point, this campaign needs to take a different tact.
I encourage you to write directly to the Park Board at PBcommissioners@vancouver.ca. Alternatively, and more effectively, write to all the commissioners directly. Their names and emails can be found here: http://vancouver.ca/your-government/park-board-commissioners.aspx
Despite the decision they have taken on this matter, we have some very good people on our Park Board who care very much for our parks and this city. While we don't agree with parking meters at Spanish Banks, I also don't believe we should define the board by this one decision. Nevertheless, the Park Board needs to know how we feel.
Besides writing, the most powerful thing we can do is vote in October. Ask the candidates if they will remove the parking meters. By all means, vote for the candidates you feel are best suited to do the job, but let them know that this issue is a factor in your voting decision.
At election time, I will try to get policy statements from the candidates and report on that. It should be noted, the only commissioner who voted against pay parking at Spanish Banks was Erin Shum.
