You probably thought this was old news, but now staff are about to present to council a request to initiate citywide street parking permits. This stems from the plan to remove all parking minimums in new developments, so developers will be able to build without providing any parking at all, if they choose. That will mean more cars on the street instead, and so the initiation of more paid permit parking and potentially everywhere.
Staff are recommending the following:
A. THAT Council approve, in principle, amendments to the Parking By-law to eliminate minimum vehicle parking requirements for all land uses citywide, and other amendments as shown in Appendix A, to be effective June 30, 2024;
FURTHER THAT the Director of Legal Services be instructed to bring forward for enactment the necessary amending By-law generally in accordance with Appendix A.
B. THAT Council receive for information the approach to managing on-street parking resulting from the elimination of minimum vehicle parking requirements.
C. THAT Council approve allotting $685,000 of incremental new parking permit and by-law ticket revenue towards staff and equipment to manage and enforce permit areas, as outlined in this report.
They call it "On-Street Parking Management", but it means pay parking permits.
The report says the parking permits will be incremental, but with the amount of development everywhere, it wouldn't take long before most areas are affected.
The City is implementing the removal of minimum onsite parking requirements city-wide and and for all uses, not just for residential, far beyond what even the Province is mandating.
What can you do? If you do not support citywide parking permits then please write to council before this Wednesday. That means now!
To do that, go to the city website. Click the button for Feedback on an upcoming Council meeting agenda item and then choose "June 26 update to parking bylaws" and then send in your comments.
Thank you!
