After China’s ban on the import of plastic waste, countries in the EU, and Canada have finally begun the process of banning single-use plastics. Prime Minister Trudeau recently announced that “Canada will ban harmful single-use plastics from coast to coast” as soon as 2021. The specific items affected by the ban will be determined on a science-based review, but single-use plastic straws, water bottles, and plastic bags are being considered. This announcement demonstrates a global trend of increasing awareness on the effect of ocean plastic and it’s a detrimental effect on marine life. Thank you to everyone who has supported this initiative at a more local level, it appears that the federal government is investing in the environment and our future.
