UWC International statement on securing
Pakistan UWC scholarships

On 1 June 2018, we had to inform the UWC community that due to the suspension of previously agreed scholarship funding, a number of offers to Pakistani nominees for places at UWC schools and colleges for the upcoming 2018-2020 academic years had to be withdrawn. At the time, alternative funding had been secured for 14 of the nominees, and their places at different UWC schools and colleges had been confirmed, but the funding for 10 of the nominees remained in question.

It is with great relief that we can now inform you that the funding for all Pakistani nominees has been secured. We are delighted that all 24 selected students nominated by the Pakistan selection committee to attend a UWC school or college from 2018-20 will be able to do so. This comes in addition to the secured funding for the second year of the 13 Pakistani students in the class of 2017-19. This good news is the result of a major collaborative effort over the last few weeks of UWC schools and colleges, UWC national committees, the UWC community of students, alumni and parents, UWC International and our partner, the Aman Foundation.

All affected Pakistani students were informed in the last few days and their respective UWC schools and colleges are in touch with them. Our apologies go to them and to their families - they had to go through an experience of excitement, utter disappointment and now relief, that no-one should have to go through. A special recognition and our thank you goes to the UWC Pakistan Alumni Network, who liaised with and supported nominees and parents through the difficult situation of the last few weeks.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all UWC donors and funding partners without whom UWC’s work and its commitment to providing a vast majority of students with scholarships would not be possible. We are thankful for their generous and unwavering support and their commitment to supporting UWC’s mission to make education a force for peace and sustainability. We would also like to thank the Aman Foundation for enabling so many students from Pakistan to attend a UWC school or college. Their funding has made a real difference in these young Pakistani lives.

We thank all members of the UWC community for their support during the last four weeks. We were delighted to see how many of you got engaged in searching for solutions for the 10 affected nominees.

We are looking forward to seeing the 24 new students from Pakistan learn and live with their peers from around the world and how they will live the UWC mission to make education a force for peace and a sustainable future.
