USTA Middle States to offer evening or weekend 3.0/3.5 18+ women's tennis league
The Issue
As women aged 18-39 who are passionate about tennis, yet are bound by our work obligations, we struggle to find opportunities to compete in our favorite sport. Currently, USTA Middle States NJD offers us (age 18-39) the chance to engage in evening or weekend leagues for only 8 weeks during spring. With each of us getting to play perhaps only 3 times during this very limited window, our options to pursue tennis are frustratingly scarce. Currently only 40+ leagues run evenings/weekends all year round. During the fall and winter, the women’s 18+ leagues are during the day and 40+ on weekends.
The current schedule doesn't accommodate those of us who work during standard hours and makes it nearly impossible to participate in tennis competition throughout most of the year. A sport that should bring us joy and be a staple part of our lives is effectively being sidelined.
Consider this: Tennis is not just a game for us, it's a stress reliever, a way to stay fit, and an opportunity to build a strong community. According to the Physical Activity Council’s annual report, tennis participation has grown by 22% in recent years, reflecting a surge in demand for flexible playing schedules, especially in leagues that cater to working individuals. The USTA's own 2020 study showed that 16% of new tennis players belong to our age group, signaling a genuine need for more suitable playing times.
An immediate solution is to establish a 3.0 and 3.5 women's tennis league that operates in the evenings or on weekends throughout the year and not just a brief seasonal offering. By reassigning time slots, dedicating courts during prime hours on weekends, or changing the women's fall/winter 40+ weekend league to 18+ like the men's league, we can accommodate the schedules of many who face this same plight.
Opening up additional leagues, extending the duration of existing ones, or removing age barriers would present opportunities for countless women like us to continue growing in a sport we cherish.
Join us in urging the USTA to acknowledge this growing need and expand their offerings for improved access. Sign this petition to ensure women have equal opportunities to participate in sports like tennis, irrespective of their work commitments or schedules.
