Used Vehicle Payment Protection
Used Vehicle Payment Protection
The Issue
I am a 17 year old boy and I had a problem which made me think of this wonderful bill idea. It would be an honor to have you read through my story and bill proposal and possibly consider it to become a law. I recently bought a car, my second ever car, one that seemed truly amazing. I was so proud to be able to afford this 2006 Ford Explorer, especially as a 17 year old kid. It may not seem like an amazing car, but it was something special to me. I bought it from a guy near Evart, he was so nice and assured me several times that the only problems were that it needed to have a tire patched and the rear passenger side blinker may need to be replaced. He also said he has only had the car for only a week, his excuse was that he just decided a Ford wasn't for him. Then again several more times said that everything was fine and dandy and will last years.
I bought it a few days later on Monday the 22nd of January. I got it registered a few days later and had it sent to the mechanic that Saturday to fix the small problems, but the mechanic found that the brake sensors needed to be replaced as well as the front brakes. I told myself this car is a good car and it will be worth fixing. So I spent the $1000 and it worked great for a week, I was able to drive it four times before on Monday the 5th of February exactly two weeks after I bought it, the car broke down in my school parking lot and I had to get it towed which cost me $150. I was ever so worried and the next day I got a call that broke my heart, the car had transmission problems that would cost me $4,600 to fix. I have spent basically everything I have on this car and I couldn't afford this. I tried explaining this to the seller and wrote him a kind letter explaining that I want a refund. He responded with a thumbs up and that is it. I then realized that he said he only had it for a week, and I figured out he probably knew about the problems with the car and just wanted to put them on while making his money back. I want to sue him for the pain and suffering as well as the money that I have lost because of the car he sold me, but there isn't a good chance that I will win because the car was sold as is. I am desperately in need of money, I spent a total of $5300 on this car and I am getting ready to pay for college, I don't want to be in debt before that.
I began to think, I hear stories about this all the time from friends, family, and from people all over the internet. I am proposing a law that allows people to not to be scared when they buy a car. Buying a car is always a gamble, sometimes you win, but other times you will get basically robbed of your money. I propose a law that allows protection for people buying a car from private owners. The law is protection that lasts a month, and if anything happens to the car or any problems happen that are not because of the buyer, and the private seller didn't state that there was anything wrong with the car, the seller has to give a full refund. I know this sounds crazy, and you are probably thinking, how is the owner supposed to know if there is a problem with the car, well add to the law that the seller must get the car checked out by a professional mechanic and it must be given a checkmark if it is in good shape and no problems are seen. This makes it fair for the seller and for the buyer.
It allows the buyer to not get left with no money and a car that doesn't work, as well as not getting the seller into trouble if he didn't know that there were any problems.
Please contact me for more information, I really hope you consider this to become a law. I know I am just a kid, but please consider this, I know that this law could help make the world such a better place and so much easier for people in need of cars to not be scared to get taken advantage of.
