USDA: Make buying & selling lion meat illegal in the U.S.
Recently, several U.S. restaurants have made national headlines for selling Lion meat tacos. In spite of the fact that lions are on the vulnerable species list (one step below endangered), it is not illegal to sell or purchase lion meat in America. This needs to be made illegal. According to the New York Daily News, "many sellers buys their lion meat from Exotic Meat Market, a U.S.-based distributor that raises the lions in the U.S. just like cattle." These majestic and endangered animals are being sent to slaughter. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service claims they are already considering granting Lions protection in the U.S. under the Endangered Species Act. African lion populations have seen a substantial decline over the past two decades and are estimated to be around 32,000, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which monitors species numbers globally. U.S. trade figures show that more than 5,600 wild Africa lions were hunted and then exported as trophies between 1999 and 2008, with 64 percent (yes, SIXTY FOUR PERCENT) of those trophies being imported into the U.S. If we do not protect these wonderful animals, future generations will never get a chance to see them alive in the wild. Tell the USDA: Make buying and selling (including international export) of Lion meat illegal!!!
