Dear friends:
As many of you know by now, Nosey was lawfully seized from the Liebel family on November 9th in Lawrence County, Alabama. The local animal control officer, Kim Carpenter, became concerned for Nosey after finding her chained and standing in her own waste. Carpenter also claims that Nosey seemed stressed and her travel arrangements were inadequate. The courts agreed that further investigation into the issue was warranted and remanded Nosey into the care of Lawrence County pending an additional trial. The County felt Nosey would receive excellent treatment at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee (TES) while awaiting her court date, and that is where she is living at the moment.
TES has provided some amazing photos of Nosey enjoying her freedom. We have included one here, but you can see more of Nosey at TES by visiting their Facebook page.
According to a news article that was released yesterday in the DecaturDaily.com, the trial to determine Nosey's fate could take place as early as this week. We will continue to update this petition as new information comes into our office.
Many, many of you are asking us: "what can I do??", and we genuinely appreciate your concern. At this juncture, sadly, there are no actions you can take to help Nosey in her court case. The case is in the hands of the Lawrence County prosecutor, and we can assure you that Lawrence County is receiving all of the information they need to adequately speak on behalf of Nosey. We flew to the east coast last week to have conversations regarding Nosey's situation with those involved, and we ask you to please trust us that no further action is needed from the public. In this instance, we must let the professionals involved do their jobs undistracted, so as to not compromise Nosey's case.
If the courts choose to return Nosey to the Liebel family, our work continues; however, the Liebel family still have many obstacles to clear in order to keep Nosey. Currently they have been denied a permit to keep Nosey in Florida, so an additional hearing will await them if they return to Florida with her.
CWI is closely monitoring the situation and developing contingency plans if she is released. Please continue to read our updates for any future action you may be able to take. We also ask that you continue to share this petition, so that we can reach more individuals with information about Nosey as this case proceeds.
We also encourage you to support ALL elephants confined to the circus by speaking out against circus cruelty at every opportunity, and working toward passing local law in your area to ban the use of elephants in traveling entertainment. If you need assistance, or a circus travels to your area, please contact us at info@cwint.org.
To support our work to end circus cruelty, we gratefully accept tax-deductible donations of any amount to: cwint.org/donate.
Thank you once again for caring about Nosey and supporting the efforts to free her and all elephants from the cruelty of circus life.
For the animals,
