Hi Everyone, Congress is currently signing a letter to the Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, asking her to disclose to Congress the reason for denying Muhammad and his family's case and asking for data on how many other US military interpreters have been denied refugees status with the same weak and unstated “discretionary concerns.” Please call your Representative at their Washington, DC office and ask him or her to join the sign-on letter for the Kamran family, which is being co-led by Republican Congressman Jeff Denham and Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin and so far has seven signers with many more likely to join. And Congress's letter INCLUDES a reference to this petition and says that almost 50,000 people have taken an interest in Muhammad's case! So you can tell your Representative that you are one of the almost 50,000 petition signers who wants Congress to take action to save this family. And several offices that were contacted by petition signers before have joined the letter or are considering joining it. So your help is making a difference! An invitation to join the letter was emailed to all House offices a few days ago, so your Representative has already been invited to join the letter. Representatives have until next Wednesday, July 25th, to join the letter. Use this link to look up your Congressman/woman if you need contact information for them. https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative Please email me at save.aysha@gmail.com (rather than commenting on this update) if you have any questions or need any more information. USCIS has admitted to our attorney that they don't have any good reason to deny Muhammad and his family (and further claimed that their "information" also makes Muhammad's 3- and 4- year old daughters as security concern). However, USCIS have so far refused to re-consider Muhammad's case AND refused to tell Congress why they denied the case. We are grateful that Congress is taking strong action now to demand the information on why the case was denied. And Congressman Denham and Raskin have said they are committed to taking further action if necessary. The White House recently said that they support immigration of former US military interpreters, so we hope the Trump Administration will re-consider Muhammad and his family's case when they realize Congress is interested in this case. Signers so far are Reps. Jeff Denham (R-CA10), Jamie Raskin (D-MY8), Derek Kilmer (D-WA6), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA7), Duncan Hunter (R-CA50), Seth Moulton (D-MA6), and Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon (R-Puerto Rico). Many others are considering signing but haven't committed yet. Many Senate offices have expressed support for this effort, too, but the Senate doesn't have a letter circulating yet. Additionally, 63 bipartisan members of Congress, including some of the same members who have signed the letter for Muhammad and family, sent a letter to Kirstjen Nielsen earlier this week asking for information on the refugee program. Congress's questions include why so many refugee cases have been unnecessarily delayed for months or years or seemingly arbitrarily denied and why admissions of Muslim refugees, including those with US military connections, are down 90% since two years ago. We are glad to see that Congress is engaged in this issue now and providing oversight on how USCIS is implementing immigration laws. Thank you for your continued support, Kristy Perano
