The Issue

Dear Senator

I am writing to ask you to support the Justice for Black Farmers Act, S.4929. This Bill addresses the history of discrimination against Black farmers and ranchers, and institutes reforms within the Department of Agriculture to prevent future discrimination.

There has been a steady decrease of Black land ownership. In the early 20th century, 14% of farms were owned by Black farmers; now, that number is less than 2%. Every year, almost 30,000 acres are taken away from Black farmers.

Under this Bill, up to 160 acres would be available to any Black person committed to stewarding the land. The Bill would provide resources to individuals and newer emerging Black-led organizations; invest in HBCUs and Black land grant institutions; provide legal support for Black farmers; and support Black farmer training programs.

By supporting this Bill, you will be taking a significant step toward reforming systemic racism, and making a major contribution to social justice.

Sincerely,
