Urging the Royal Horticultural Society to Commit to a Peat-Free Policy for All Flower Show
The Issue
Urging the Royal Horticultural Society to Commit to a Peat-Free Policy for All Flower Shows from 2026
We, the undersigned, call on the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to honour and fully commit to its pledge of going peat-free across all its flower shows, including the Chelsea Flower Show, Badminton, Sandringham and others, starting from 2026.
Peat extraction is a significant driver of environmental degradation, destroying vital carbon-storing ecosystems, releasing greenhouse gases, and threatening biodiversity. The RHS, as a leading authority in horticulture, has a responsibility to champion sustainable practices and lead the transition to peat-free gardening. By enforcing a strict peat-free policy for all exhibits, plants, and materials used in its flower shows from 2026, the RHS can set a powerful example for the horticultural industry and inspire millions of gardeners to adopt environmentally responsible practices.
We urge the RHS to:
1. Publicly reaffirm its commitment to a 100% peat-free policy for all its flower shows from 2026.
2. Implement clear guidelines and robust monitoring to ensure all exhibitors, suppliers, and participants comply with the peat-free standard.
3. Provide support and resources to exhibitors to facilitate the transition to peat-free alternatives.
4. Promote the benefits of peat-free gardening to the public through its platforms and events.
The time to act is now. By standing firm on its peat-free commitment, the RHS can protect our planet’s precious peatlands and drive meaningful change in the fight against climate change. We call on the RHS to lead with action and integrity, ensuring its flower shows are a beacon of sustainability from 2026 onward.
