The issue

The safety of our children is a priority for every community, and ensuring safe passage for them on their way to and from school is a vital responsibility that falls on all of us, including local governments. Therefore, we are urgently calling on the City of Whittlesea Council to take immediate action to address a significant safety concern affecting our community.

Northside Christian College in Bundoora is located on McLeans Road, a thoroughfare where traffic can be heavy and unpredictable, especially during school drop-off and pick-up times. Currently, there is no designated or supervised school crossing along the entire stretch of McLeans Road from Greenhills Road to the Bundoora Square Entrance, leaving students vulnerable as they navigate this busy road.

Many children must cross this busy main road unassisted. Parents and residents have witnessed multiple near-miss incidents involving speeding vehicles, particularly during peak school times. Without intervention, it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs.

We are requesting that Council:

• Conduct an urgent road safety assessment
• Install a supervised school crossing (lollipop crossing)
• Review speed limits, signage, and pedestrian protections

Our children’s safety must come first.

By installing a dedicated and supervised school crossing, the City of Whittlesea can ensure a safer environment for school children, parents, and drivers alike. A visible, well-marked crossing with an attendant present during peak times would provide peace of mind for parents and faculty and significantly decrease the likelihood of accidents. This measure is not only about enhancing safety but also about demonstrating that our children's lives are valued above all else.

We urge City of Whittlesea Council to prioritise this matter immediately, acting on behalf of present and future students of Northside Christian College. Let's not wait for a tragic accident to propel this issue to the forefront, let's be proactive in creating a safe environment now.
