Urgent Support Needed for Funding Access to Essential Medical Treatment

Urgent Support Needed for Funding Access to Essential Medical Treatment
The Issue
I am calling for urgent action to secure funding for Oestrogen hormone implants as a vital treatment for Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI). This treatment is essential for protecting long-term health and well-being, yet access has been unfairly denied within the BNSSG ICB despite clear medical evidence and the support of leading specialists.
POI is a serious endocrine disorder affecting approximately 1 in 100 women under 40, 1 in 1,000 under 30, and 1 in 10,000 under 20. Unlike natural menopause, POI results in ovarian failure at a much younger age, whether this be spontaneous, surgical or medical, putting affected women at a significantly increased risk of severe health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, dementia, osteoporosis and autoimmune disease. Without appropriate treatment, POI can drastically reduce life expectancy and quality of life.
Despite these risks, my recent exceptional circumstances application for hormone implants was refused, based on a flawed assessment and health board decision. This contradicts clinical guidelines and best medical practice, disregarding both the severity of the condition and the long-term financial burden of treating preventable diseases caused by untreated POI.
Denying this essential treatment is not only a health injustice but also a short-sighted financial decision. Studies show that providing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for POI significantly reduces future NHS costs by preventing life-threatening and debilitating conditions. While this treatment is funded in many parts of England and Wales, BNSSG continues to neglect women’s health services, leaving those affected without access to life-saving care.
My Story:
I was diagnosed with spontaneous POI at a young age of 28, I am 1 in 1000, a life-changing condition that I never expected to face. After years of fertility treatment due to my condition I conceived my twins through egg donor conception. I have also since under gone a total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy due to pregnancy complications, I now am classed as surgical POI.
As a mother of three-year-old twins and a wife, I am fighting not just for my own health but for my family’s future. Without the right treatment, I face an increased risk of serious health complications that could affect mine and my families quality of life! Despite my medical team submitting my application and providing extensive medical evidence, I have been denied access to the only treatment that can protect my long-term health.
I have seen firsthand the devastating effects of untreated POI. My grandmother suffered multiple strokes, heart failure, 4 osteoporosis-related fractures, and dementia due to undiagnosed and untreated POI. In her time, the condition was not well understood. Today, we have the knowledge and medical advancements to prevent history from repeating itself, and I refuse to passively accept this fate.
But this isn’t just about me—it’s about every woman in the BNSSG area who is being denied the care they desperately need. POI is not a choice, and neither should access to treatment be. Women should not have to fight for a basic, evidence-based medical treatment that is available elsewhere in the country.
I urge you to sign this petition and stand with me in demanding fair, evidence-based access to hormone implants for POI patients. No woman should be denied the treatment that could save her life.
We call on decision-makers to immediately review this case and ensure that women with POI receive the medical care they need and deserve.
A team of local medical professionals, including gynaecologists, GPs, and women’s health specialists, fully support this appeal.
