Around 6 am CT on Monday, December 29, 2025, two immigrant parents with legal work authorization and who have diligently followed citizenship processes were detained by ICE in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. While the mother was released later that day, the father is still in custody. After two full days of detainment, held against his will, with no wrongdoing, no criminal record, he is attempting to survive a severe, uncontrolled seizure disorder without his daily anticonvulsant medication. This has put him at risk of status epilepticus, brain injury, and death. This is not a routine medical issue, and even a single missed dose can be fatal. Any transfer, delay, or interruption in medication administration places him in grave and imminent danger. Our goal is to either pressure ICE to give him the life-saving medication he needs to survive while detained, or if possible, pressure them to release him immediately.

He has been shackled and mistreated while in detention—a violation of his civil rights. Furthermore, his wife has been pressured to sign documents for a whole-family deportation plan, which would include separating one child (the youngest, 6 years old) from the rest of the family. She was also accused of being in a gang simply for having a tattoo of her child’s name.

This is an extraordinary humanitarian situation that justifies immediate release, yet ICE has kept him from his family, and refused his medical needs.

Despite having documentation to support that he has abided by all laws and is not a criminal and has done nothing wrong, he is still being involuntarily detained. What has transpired over the course of this week has been detrimental to the entire family’s well-being and ability to survive. After releasing the mother, ICE affirmatively told the father, her husband, that he would be released shortly, too, instructing the family to come pick him up. Then, a family friend waited at Broadview for more than an hour, only to be told instead that ICE had decided to transfer him to Indiana. This has not happened yet but we are concerned about what they will put him through without enough public pressure and attention.

With three young children, and only one parent released from detention at present, the family is currently taking steps to secure his prompt release in light of this emergency, and would be grateful for everyone who can support by calling on Congress members to demand his release from the ICE facility in Chicago. The immediate priorities that we need support for are, in order:

  1. Pressure Congress people in Illinois to demand that ICE release the immigrant father
  2. Pressure Congress people in your own state, if you are not in IL, to release him
  3. Pressure the detention facility directly to give him the meds he needs to stay alive in the meantime while he is being held there.
  4. Donate to help cover important legal fees for the father and family needs - https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/hyde-park-migrant-family-needs-support

No form of support or direct action is too small. We need everyone. Whether you have money to give or not, you have time and attention and giving it to this can make the difference between this father losing his life or not, and the entire family staying together.

Update: Jan 1, 2026

We can now confirm that Albiero finally received his seizure medication. We are relieved this basic medical need was met — but we are deeply alarmed that DHS repeatedly claimed his medication had been administered when our client's account directly contradicted that assertion.

That kind of inconsistency about a person’s life-saving seizure medication is dangerous and unacceptable.

Given his medical vulnerability, he should be released immediately.
