Urgent Road Safety Concerns Outside Monkshouse Primary School, Pennygate, Spalding
Urgent Road Safety Concerns Outside Monkshouse Primary School, Pennygate, Spalding
The Issue
I am submitting a letter to our local councillor to ask for changes to be made for the safety of the children at drop off and pick-up times. Please see the letter below:
Dear Councillor Taylor,
Re: Urgent Road Safety Concerns Outside Monkshouse Primary School, Pennygate, Spalding
I am writing to raise urgent concerns regarding road safety outside Monkshouse Primary School and along Pennygate.
There are zig-zag road markings outside the school entrance intended to keep the area clear and ensure good visibility for children crossing and for drivers approaching the school. However, as these markings are currently not covered by a legal order, they are not enforceable. As a result, vehicles frequently stop or park on them during drop-off and pick-up times, significantly obstructing visibility and creating a dangerous environment for children and families.
This issue has become increasingly concerning, and sadly today a child was struck by a car while crossing at the junction of Hannam Boulevard. Incidents such as this highlight the very real dangers currently present around the school and demonstrate the urgent need for improved safety measures.
I would therefore strongly urge the council to prioritise placing the zig-zag markings outside the school under a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) so that they become legally enforceable. This would allow appropriate enforcement and help ensure the area remains clear, improving visibility and safety for pupils, parents, and staff.
In addition, I believe it is essential that further safety measures are considered. The introduction of a school crossing patrol (lollipop person) would provide vital support for children and families crossing the road during busy school times. Increased enforcement from police or traffic wardens would also be extremely beneficial, as the driving and parking along Pennygate during drop-off and pick-up times is currently very unsafe.
These concerns are not mine alone. I have included additional signatures from other concerned parents who share these worries and support the request for urgent action to improve safety around the school.
The safety of children travelling to and from school must be a priority. I would be grateful if this matter could be reviewed as a matter of urgency and if you could advise what steps the council intends to take to address these concerns.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue. I look forward to your response.
