The Issue

Our community of residents of the Marina del Rey buildings The Regatta, The Cove and The Azzurra (13600, 13650 and 13700 Marina Pointe Drive respectively) is deeply connected to the Yvonne B. Burke Park. Since the time of our buildings' establishment in 2003, we have enjoyed direct access to this beautiful space. This to-and-from access is more than a convenience; it's a core part of our daily lives. All of our community's residents, including families, persons with disabilities, and older adults, purchased our homes here with the expectation of this direct connection to the park, a key feature of coastal living that enhances our quality of life.

The park is not only a place for recreation and exercise, but it also serves as a safe and easy route to and from restaurants and other local amenities. This direct access from our buildings' lower levels is vital, as it provides our residents, of all ages, with a safe path away from the heavily trafficked roads surrounding our community. Cutting off this access—as well as the path to Ralphs on the southern end of the park—endangers public safety by forcing families and individuals and their pets to navigate busy sidewalks and intersections, often at night when visibility and safety are significantly reduced. This risk will only increase with the opening of the new Cedars Sinai Hospital on Lincoln Boulevard, which is expected to bring even more traffic and pedestrian activity to the area.

We strongly urge local authorities and community planners to acknowledge the vital importance of maintaining full access to our park for both current and future Marina del Rey residents. Our Marina Pointe community has enjoyed this to-and-from access for over 20 years, and restoring and preserving this full access is an urgent priority to ensure the safety, convenience, and well-being of all residents in our buildings and the surrounding neighborhood.

Sign this petition and also vocalize your comments below to help us restore and preserve all direct access points to the Yvonne B. Burke Park, including 1. via Marina Pointe residences, 2. via Ralphs, and 3. via Thatcher Avenue. Our primary goal is to ensure our wonderful community of Marina del Rey remains vibrant, safe, and connected. Together, we can protect our neighborhood and the lifestyle we cherish.

RELEVANT FACTS & INSIGHTS:

  • The Marina Pointe community is focused on a resolution and requests authorities to restore full park access both for our buildings and the surrounding MDR neighborhood.
  • Our community has possessed ingress/egress park access for over 20 years.
  • Residents purchased their homes expecting access to and from the park.
  •  Ingress/egress park access via Thatcher Avenue is not sufficient access for the Marina del Rey community and surrounding neighborhoods.
  • Park access is essential for safety, recreation, and local travel.
  • Complicating and refusing park access compromises the safety of all neighborhood residents, including older adults, disabled persons, families with young children, and pets.
  • Park access restriction increases safety risks, exposing residents to increasing nearby traffic on surrounding roads and reduced safety at night.
