Urgent Request for More Accessibility from Congressman Andy Barr
0 have signed. Let’s get to 200!
My name is Josh Shapiro and I am a constituent of Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District. Like many others, I have never visited my congressperson’s office or attended a public event. This is not for lack of interest. We want to show up. We want to talk with you. But, we cannot.
Why? Because we work.
Your mobile office hours are scheduled when most of us are working and with too few exceptions, your “Coffee with your Congressman” events are held on weekdays during normal business hours.
It is an undue burden to expect us to spend time away from our jobs (and in many cases, it’s simply not possible to take the time off) to accommodate your schedule. If we expect other public services like libraries to be open to us when we are not working, it is reasonable to expect our congressman to be available when we are.
Thus, my fellow constituents and I request the following:
- Public events be held on weekends just as frequently as they are held on weekdays.
- Your mobile office hours be regularly extended to weekends and evenings.
- Events be non-ticketed. We should not have to pay for access to our elected representatives.
- Events be scheduled more than a week in advance. A few days' notice is not ample enough time for working people.
In an email sent to constituents on March 5th, you boasted about your record of being accessible to us. We aim to hold to your commitment.
