The Issue

The New York State Senate just passed a bill banning industrial octopus farming and the sale of farmed octopus products in New York — by a landslide vote of 55 to 5. Now the companion bill is sitting in the Assembly, and the legislative session ends Friday night.

Octopuses are among the most intelligent animals on Earth. They solve complex problems, navigate mazes, use tools, and display distinct personalities. Animal welfare experts are clear: intensive factory farming is wholly unsuited for animals this sentient, and would cause significant suffering. New York has a chance to stop this industry before it takes root in the United States — but only if Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie brings the bill to a floor vote before time runs out.

The Senate heard New Yorkers loud and clear. Now the Assembly must do the same.

Sign to tell Speaker Heastie to bring the Octopus Farming Ban Bill (A8043C) to a floor vote before Friday night.

We're calling on Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to bring A8043C to an immediate floor vote and make New York the first state in the nation to ban industrial octopus farming.
