As a parent of a child with severe allergies, I understand firsthand the life-saving importance of having a full-time school nurse on campus. My child’s reliance on an EpiPen for potentially fatal reactions is not unique—many students across Broward County face serious health challenges, requiring regular medical oversight.

Despite serving 132 public elementary schools, Broward County does not guarantee a full-time nurse at every site, leaving students vulnerable and staff unprepared for emergencies. When minutes count, having a trained medical professional on-site can mean the difference between minor and major injuries. Teachers and administrators, no matter how caring, are not equipped to handle complex medical crises without professional support.

According to the National Association of School Nurses, full-time nurses improve attendance, detect health issues early, and help prevent disease outbreaks. This is not just a health issue—it’s a matter of equity and safety. Every child deserves access to medical care during the school day.
