Dear Friends,
I was looking at google earth and checked out Finland’s Onkalo nuclear waste mine site over the years - its not operational and still in the mining/research stage but I was struck by how big the area is and how it’s footprint has grown to eat away at the surrounding forests in the years of mining. Finland has a teeny tiny fraction of nuclear waste compared to the UK. The UK's nuclear mine would be on a far greater ... and far hotter scale. Nuclear Waste services say the footprint of the mine shafts and associated infrastructure would be 1km square (below ground the mine would be up to 50km square). I think 1km square is a very conservative estimate given that there would be lots of associated infrastructure including silos of bentonite, slurry tanks, spoil and process plants on site. We know from experience that the nuclear industry always takes ever more land as the years go on - just look at Sellafield’s ever expanding fences. Here is a timelapse of Finland’s Onkalo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yb--ZIUMWuU
Please keep sharing the petition to prevent this juggernaut on the Lake District coast especially if you live in Cumbria.
Many thanks
