Pollsmoor Prison in the Western Cape is currently facing an urgent crisis that infringes upon basic human rights, and this is not just a local concern—it is a matter of national disgrace for South Africa. The overcrowding and dehumanising conditions at Pollsmoor have reached alarming levels, presenting a humanitarian emergency that demands immediate action from the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services.

Growing up in Cape Town, I have always believed in the dignity of every human being and the importance of justice in our society. It is heartbreaking to witness the current state of Pollsmoor, where prisoners are treated worse than animals. This crisis isn't just about infrastructure; it's about human dignity and the core values of our nation. Conditions such as inadequate living space, lack of basic sanitary facilities, and pervasive violence are routine occurrences that all contravene the standards set by our own Correctional Services Act and international human rights laws.

Overcrowding is a significant problem. According to recent statistics, Pollsmoor operates at more than double its intended capacity. A facility meant for 4,336 people is currently housing over 8,500 inmates. Such conditions are unsustainable and lead to increased violence, health risks, and a lack of rehabilitation opportunities, which are the very foundations of our correctional system's purpose.

Beyond the numbers, these conditions strip individuals of their dignity and worth. Many inmates spend years awaiting trial, trapped in an environment that resembles more of a breeding ground for further criminal behavior than a place for rehabilitation. Addressing these conditions cannot be delayed or ignored; it requires urgent, concrete, and compassionate solutions.

The Department of Correctional Services must immediately prioritize reducing overcrowding through measures such as parole or bail reviews for non-violent offenders and increasing support for alternative sentencing programs. Furthermore, the physical conditions within Pollsmoor must be improved to ensure access to necessary healthcare, clean water, adequate food, and educational and vocational training programs.

This change will not only restore humanity to those incarcerated at Pollsmoor but will also strengthen public safety by reducing recidivism through effective rehabilitation. It is vital to restore trust in our justice system and ensure that human rights violations do not occur on our watch.
