Urgent European Union Action to Stop Executions in Iran

I call on the European Parliament and the European Union to take urgent, decisive, and practical action against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s escalating campaign of executions, torture, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, and the systematic persecution of protesters, political prisoners, dissidents, women, children, persons with disabilities, ethnic and religious minorities, LGBTQ+ people, journalists, human rights defenders, and prisoners of conscience.
In the first seven months of 2026 alone, at least 916 executions have been recorded in Iran. This horrifying number demonstrates that the death penalty is no longer merely a criminal punishment—it has become a political weapon used to terrorize society, silence dissent, and maintain the regime’s grip on power through fear.
The recent public executions in Isfahan, carried out despite desperate attempts by ordinary citizens who gathered to stop them, show the cruelty of a government that ignores the voices of its own people and continues to rule through violence rather than justice.
Following the mass killings during the nationwide protests in January 2026, the Islamic Republic has intensified its campaign of executions, torture, and repression. Instead of ending violence, it continues to eliminate critics, protesters, and anyone perceived as a threat. This systematic campaign demands an immediate international response.
The Islamic Republic has also sentenced to death and executed persons with intellectual, psychosocial, and physical disabilities, demonstrating complete disregard for human dignity and its obligations under international human rights law.
The European Union must not limit its response to expressions of concern. It must use every available diplomatic, political, legal, and economic instrument to pressure the Islamic Republic to immediately halt all executions, end torture, release political prisoners, and stop the systematic persecution of all vulnerable and marginalized groups.
The Islamic Republic’s actions also pose a growing security concern beyond Iran’s borders. Through transnational repression, intimidation of dissidents abroad, hostage diplomacy, surveillance, espionage, support for militant and extremist networks, and hostile activities targeting democratic societies, the regime threatens not only the Iranian people but also the security, stability, and democratic values of Europe.
I also call on the European Union and its Member States to recognize that the embassies, consulates, cultural centers, and diplomatic missions of the Islamic Republic operating across Europe may pose a potential security risk to Iranian dissidents, journalists, human rights defenders, Jewish communities, LGBTQ+ communities, and other vulnerable groups living in Europe.
In light of documented concerns regarding transnational repression, threats, surveillance, intimidation, assassination plots, attempted abductions, and other hostile activities linked to Iranian state actors, the European Union must urgently review the status and activities of these diplomatic missions.
I respectfully call on the European Parliament and the institutions of the European Union to:
Demand an immediate halt to all executions in Iran, particularly the execution of protesters, political prisoners, prisoners of conscience, women, juveniles, and persons with disabilities.
Demand the immediate and unconditional release of everyone imprisoned solely because of peaceful protest, political opinion, religion or belief, human rights work, gender, sexual orientation, identity, ethnicity, disability, or membership in a minority community.
Expand targeted sanctions against Iranian officials, judges, prosecutors, prison authorities, Revolutionary Guard commanders, security forces, and institutions responsible for executions, torture, forced confessions, unfair trials, and crimes against humanity.
Close the embassies, consulates, cultural centers, and diplomatic missions affiliated with the Islamic Republic across the European Union wherever credible security concerns or evidence of threatening activities exist.
Expel diplomats and officials involved in intimidation, surveillance, propaganda, espionage, transnational repression, or other hostile activities directed against people living in Europe.
Strengthen international accountability mechanisms to document crimes, preserve evidence, and ensure perpetrators are held accountable under international law.
Provide stronger protection pathways for Iranians at risk, including human rights defenders, journalists, women’s rights activists, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ+ people, ethnic and religious minorities, former political prisoners, and the families of victims.
This petition is not directed against the people of Iran. It is a call to stand with them.
The Iranian people are risking their lives for freedom, democracy, equality, and human dignity. They should not be left alone while executions, torture, and repression continue on a daily basis.
The protection of the Iranian people and the protection of democratic societies in Europe are inseparable. Stopping executions in Iran is not only a moral and humanitarian obligation—it is also essential for defending international peace, human rights, and global security.
The European Union must act now—before more innocent lives are taken, before more families are destroyed, and before the cycle of violence extends even further beyond Iran’s borders.
