The Issue

Tomorrow morning, a mother named Mariola is scheduled to walk into a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Burlington, Massachusetts — and she may not walk out.

Mariola came to the United States from Guatemala 16 years ago, fleeing violence and persecution. She settled in Lynn, where she has spent years working as a paraprofessional at Cobbet Elementary School, helping children learn and grow. Her 15-year-old son — a U.S. citizen — has never known a life without her.

This Mother's Day, he stood at a rally in Red Rock Park and said what every child should be able to say: "My mom is the most important person in my life."

ICE has told Mariola to appear on May 11, prepared for possible detainment and deportation. If that happens, a teenage American boy loses his mother. A school loses a beloved staff member. A community loses one of its own.

Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson and the City Council have already sent a letter to the federal government urging ICE to let her stay.  Her principal showed up to Sunday's rally to speak on her behalf.

Mariola herself has said this fight is bigger than her — it is about thousands in Massachusetts and millions across the country facing the same threat.

But right now, today, it is about one mother and one son. Sign this petition to demand ICE grant Mariola a stay of removal and allow her to remain with her family.
